How Does Thyroid Hormone Replacement Work?
Thyroid hormone replacement therapy is a treatment that addresses hypothyroidism by supplying the body with synthetic thyroid hormones. The primary synthetic hormone used is levothyroxine, which is a synthetic version of T4. When taken orally, levothyroxine is absorbed into the bloodstream and delivered to the thyroid gland. Within the thyroid gland, it undergoes conversion to T3, the active form of thyroid hormone. T3 then binds to specific receptors in the body's cells, initiating metabolic reactions that regulate various bodily functions.
